Architecture in Sifnos

Alexandre Pavlidis Architect has developed around ten projects in Sifnos, Greece, including private houses, a hotel and a retreat centre.

Our work on the island explores the contemporary techniques of constructions in relation to the particular landscape of Sifnos: its dry-stone walls, agricultural terraces, paths, courtyards and compact built forms.

Rather than reproducing traditional Cycladic architecture, each project starts from the specific conditions of its site. Topography, wind, sunlight, views, existing structures and vegetation determine the organisation of the buildings and their relationship to the landscape.

Projects range from new houses and transformations of existing buildings to larger hospitality programmes. Among the most documented are House with a Garden, organised around a protected courtyard, and Within the Earth, where architecture becomes part of the existing agricultural terraces.

Across these different scales and programmes, the objective remains the same: to develop an architecture that is deeply connected to the material, climatic and territorial character of Sifnos and the Cyclades.

Alexandre Pavlidis Architect works in Sifnos from the first architectural concept through detailed design, in close collaboration with local craftsmen and contractors, building on relationships refined over years of working together.
